Contemporary ink inscription in German on the first blank page dated «Zum 19. September 1899 ».

Contemporary, possibly Egyptian, full calf binding (light brown with blind and gilt geometrical tooled in Arabic style) on the front board; decorative endpapers; and gilt edges .

A very good album. Interesting photography album by a German tourist in Egypt during his cruise up the Nile in the late 1890s.

The images show the Nile banks, with small villages and numerous dahabiyas, boats, barges (ship «Assouan» belonging to the 'Cook & Son') and river steamers («Cleopatra» and «Cairo», the latter with the H&P flag on the mast).

A couple of images show the life aboard the Nile steamer in which the album compiler travelled, including an interesting scene of the souvenir trade between tourists and locals, and a group portrait of local third class passengers on the deck.

There are also nice street views, probably of Cairo; images of the Luxor Grand Hotel and photos of the Philae Temple showing its original state before it was flooded during the construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1899-1902.

The tourists pose in front of the temple with the local guides, children, or riding donkeys.

Several photos portray local farmers, horse and camel riders, boaters, women, etc..

The album ends with a portrait of the tourists posing in front of the Temple of Jupiter in Baalbec, Lebanon.
