Ilustrado na folha de rosto com uma gravura enquadrada por vinhetas tipográficas com o monograma do nome de Jesus sobre um sol resplandecente, muito usado pela Companhia de Jesus nas suas publicações, que neste livro aparece ladeado pelos apóstolos São Pedro e São Paulo, cujas imagens servem para atestar que as regras contidas neste ritual estão de acordo com os ensinamentos de Cristo. No mesmo sentido de garantir a autoridade do texto a folha de rosto inclui igualmente a referência, em grandes caracteres itálicos, que a obra tem licença da Inquisição, do Bispo Local e do Rei.

Impressão a preto e vermelho sobre papel de linho alvo e sonante, muito nítida, com finos caracteres itálicos, que são usados na dedicatória, nas páginas 1-8, 15-17, 41-42, 44-45, 51-53 e 59 e com belos caracteres redondos no resto do livro. O texto apresenta-se ornamentado por cabeções compostos por pequenas vinhetas, capitulares decoradas a preto e vermelho e um magnífico florão de remate a vermelho no fim do índice. O Ofício de Defuntos, que ocupa as 96 páginas finais, está impresso em elegantes caracteres redondos de maior dimensão.

A obra contém pautas, impressas a preto e vermelho, com a música das antífonas, salmos e hinos cantados durante as cerimónias religiosas.

Obra muito importante para o estudo do funcionamento da Igreja Católica e da espiritualidade e litúrgia do período da chamada Contra-Reforma, em que foram implementadas as reformas do Concílio de Trento. É igualmente importante por conter valiosos elementos para o estudo da aplicação e da vivência dessas reformas, em Portugal e especificamente na Diocese de Évora.

Está completa, mas, conforme era comum na época, tem os seguintes erros tipográficos de numeração: no caderno d, tem d por d3 e um erro do encadernador fazendo que as páginas 25 a 32 estejam fora de ordem, a página 132 está numerada 123 (inversão de algarismos) e a 151 está numerada 152, sendo que além de a obra estar completa estes erros tipográficos não afectam o texto e número total das páginas.

Exemplar muito limpo, com maravilhosa sonoridade do papel, a apresentação tipográfica barroca é de grande beleza, é um livro muito raro, impresso na Tipografia da Universidade de Évora. As obras publicadas por esta tipografia da Companhia de Jesus, que dirigia a Universidade, são todas cuidadosamente impressas e muito raras.

As folhas preliminares contêm as licenças, a dedicatória de Luís Dias a D. Francisco Barreto, 41º Bispo do Algarve, entre 1671 e 1679 e o índice.

Reedição melhorada da 1ª edição publicada em Lisboa por Pedro Crasbeeck em 1617 durante o pontificado de Paulo V, que decorreu de 1605 a 1621.

O Ritual Romano para uso da Igreja de Portugal, contém explicações sobre os fundamentos teológicos de cada um dos sacramentos e cerimónias, as regras para a sua realização, os textos que deviam ser lidos, os cânticos que as deveriam acompanhar e os paramentos que deviam ser utilizados em cada uma delas pelos diáconos, presbíteros, bispos e cardeais que presidiam e oficiavam.

Assim esta obra estabelece os modos de administração do baptismo a crianças, a adultos em diversas circunstâncias, a absolvição de pecados e de excomungados vivos e já falecidos, do casamento, da comunhão dos doentes, da adminsitração da extrema unção, das orações pelas almas dos falecidos, determina a quem deve ser negado o enterro eclesiástico, o modo de celebrar os funerais de crianças segundo o costume da Diocese de Évora, as cerimónias de benção da primeira pedra das igrejas e das novas igrejas e oratórios públicos, assim como dos locais de inumação dos cadáveres.

Contém também regras para a benção de animais domésticos e agrícolas, dos campos, da água e a maneira de realizar exorcismos de possuídos pelo demónio segundo a fórmula de Santo Ambrósio, Bispo de Milão. assim como as cerimónias para a recepção dos legados papais e dos bispos quando visitam as paróquias.

No fim, com paginação separada, contém um pormenorizado conjunto de regras para realizar o ofício de defuntos acompanhadas de um rico acervo de pautas musicais dos cânticos nele executados.

Illustrated with an engraving framed by typographic vignettes on the title page, with the monogram of Jesus over a bright sun, which was frequently used by the Company of Jesus in their editions. Jesus appears surrounded by St. Peter and St. Paul, attesting that the rules in this Ritual is in accordance to the teachings of Christ. The title page also includes the reference, in italic, that this work is licenced by the Inquisition, the local Bishop and the King.

Printed in black and red on white, crisp and resounding linen paper; the text is very clear, with fine italic type used in the dedication and on pages 1–8, 15–17, 41–42, 44–45, 51–53 and 59, and beautiful round type throughout the rest of the book. The text is embellished with headpieces comprising small vignettes, decorated initials in black and red, and a magnificent red finishing fleuron at the end of the table of contents. The Office of the Dead, which occupies the final 96 pages, is printed in elegant, larger round type.

This work contains music scores, printed in black and red, of the antiphons, psalms, and hymns to be chanted at the religious ceremonies.

A very important work for the study of the functioning of the Catholic Church and of the spirituality and liturgy of the period known as the Counter-Reformation, during which the reforms of the Council of Trent were implemented. It is equally important as it contains valuable insights into the study of the implementation and lived experience of these reforms in Portugal, and specifically in the Diocese of Évora.

It is complete, but, as was common at the time, it contains the following numbering errors: in section d, ‘d’ is printed as ‘d3’ and there is a bookbinder’s error causing pages 25 to 32 to be out of order; page 132 is numbered 123 (a transposed digit) and page 151 is numbered 152; however, as the work is complete, these errors do not affect the total number of pages.

A very clean copy with a beautifully typeset presentation of a very rare book, printed at the University of Évora Press. The works published by this press, run by the Society of Jesus, which administered the University, are all carefully printed and very rare.

The preliminary pages contain the licences, Luís Dias’s dedication to Francisco Barreto, the 41st Bishop of the Algarve, who served between 1671 and 1679, and the table of contents.

An improved reprint of the first edition published in Lisbon by Pedro Crasbeeck in 1617 during the pontificate of pope Paul V, which lasted from 1605 to 1621.

The Roman Ritual for use by the Church of Portugal contains explanations of the theological foundations of each of the sacraments and ceremonies, the rules governing their celebration, the texts to be read, the hymns to accompany them, and the vestments to be worn on each occasion by the deacons, priests, bishops and cardinals who preside and officiate.

This work thus sets out the procedures for administering baptism to children and adults in various circumstances, the absolution of sins and of those who have been excommunicated—both living and deceased—marriage, Holy Communion for the sick, the administration of the Anointing of the Sick, and prayers for the souls of the deceased; it also determines who is to be denied a church burial, the manner of conducting children’s funerals in accordance with the custom of the Diocese of Évora, the ceremonies for the blessing of the foundation stone of churches and of new churches and public oratories, as well as of places where bodies are interred.

It also contains rules for the blessing of domestic and farm animals, of the fields and of water, and the manner of performing exorcisms on those possessed by the devil according to the formula of Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, as well as the ceremonies for receiving papal legates and bishops when they visit parishes.

At the end, in a separate section, there is a detailed set of rules for conducting funeral services, accompanied by a rich collection of musical scores for the hymns performed during the service.
