A introdução contém uma explicação do âmbito da obra, dos métodos usados para recolher e descrever a informação linguística, assim como um agradecimento ao Instituto de Alta Cultura de Portugal pela colaboração dada aos inquéritos realizados em Portugal. Assim enumera os lugares estudados, as denominações dos lugares e dos habitantes, as áreas das línguas peninsulares (com o limite da ditongação de a e o) e os nomes dialectais das falas locais.

Os fólios finais contêm o índice e o cólofon.

Este primeiro volume inclui as formas de pronunciação em grande número de locais de Portugal e Espanha das palavras, Abeja a Eje. Foi o único volume publicado.

É de grande valor para estudar as falas e a realidade cultural das aldeias peninsulares na primeira metade do século XX.

Este projecto foi concebido no início do século XX, por Ramón Menéndez Pidal e a sua equipa na Secção de Filologia do Centro de Estudos Históricos de Madrid, pertencente à Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios. O director dos trabalhos foi Tomás Navarro Tomás. O projecto inseria-se no âmbito da Geografia Linguística europeia da época, de que tinha sido exemplo o Atlas Linguistique de la France dirigido por Jules Gilliéron.

Em 1914 já estava delineado o projecto, mas só em 1930 foram impressos os questionários e entre 1931 e 1936 foram realizados quase todos os inquéritos. Com a Guerra Civil de Espanha e a Segunda Guerra Mundial o projecto sofreu novos atrasos e depois de retomados os trabalhos foi publicado o primeiro, e único, volume, em 1962.

O CSIC tem actualmente em curso, desde 2009, um projecto de publicar online os materiais inéditos desta obra de investigação linguística.

The introduction contains an explanation of the scope of the work, the methods used to collect and describe the linguistic information, as well as an acknowledgement to the Instituto de Alta Cultura de Portugal for the collaboration given to the surveys carried out in Portugal. It thus lists the places studied, the names of the places and inhabitants, the areas of the Peninsular languages (with the limit of the diphthongation of a and o) and the dialectal names of local speech.

The final folios contain the index and colophon.

This first volume includes the forms of pronunciation in a large number of locations in Portugal and Spain of the words, Abeja to Eje. It was the only volume published.

The director of the work was Tomás Navarro Tomás. The project was within the framework of the European Linguistic Geography of the time, an example of which had been the Atlas Linguistique de la France directed by Jules Gilliéron.

In 1914 the project was already outlined, but it was not until 1930 that the questionnaires were printed and between 1931 and 1936 almost all the surveys were carried out. With the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War the project suffered further delays and after work resumed the first, and only, volume was published in 1962.

The CSIC has currently, since 2009, been running a project to publish online the unpublished materials from this linguistic research work.
