Conjunto completo e raríssimo do suplemento à Encyclopædia Britannica, publicada inicialmente em fascículos entre 1815 e 1824. Apresenta-se como obra autónoma, mas complementar às edições principais, sendo considerada indispensável para investigadores do pensamento britânico e das ciências no período pós-iluminista. Além de reunir atualizações fundamentais às edições anteriores, integrando avanços científicos e técnicos da época, este suplemento distingue-se pelas célebres dissertações introdutórias de Dugald Stewart, John Playfair e de William Thomas Brande, que conferem à coleção um carácter ensaístico e reflexivo.

A segunda parte, mais extensa, inclui reflexões sobre Locke, Hume, Kant e outros, e representa um dos últimos trabalhos filosóficos de Stewart.

John Playfair – Dissertation on the Progress of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Partes I e II). A primeira parte cobre o período que vai até Newton e a segunda abrange os desenvolvimentos subsequentes, incluindo os contributos de Euler, D’Alembert, Lagrange e Laplace. Esta dissertação foi a última obra do autor, publicada postumamente.

William Thomas Brande – Dissertation on the Progress of Chemical Philosophy. Brande, eminente químico britânico e secretário da Royal Society, apresenta uma síntese do progresso da química desde a Antiguidade até ao final do século XVIII, com atenção às transformações teóricas e experimentais que definiram o campo moderno da química.

Copy with small stains and leather flaws on the covers of some volumes, as well as damage to the hinges, mainly on the fourth volume, with the front cover partially loose. Complete and extremely rare set of supplements to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, originally published in instalments between 1815 and 1824. It is presented as a standalone work, but complementary to the main editions, and is considered indispensable for researchers of British thought and science in the post-Enlightenment period. In addition to bringing together fundamental updates to previous editions, integrating scientific and technical advances of the time, this supplement is distinguished by the famous introductory dissertations by Dugald Stewart, John Playfair and William Thomas Brande, which give the collection an essayistic and reflective character.

Its rarity lies not only in the scale and quality of its contents, but also in its careful editorial finish and the difficulty in gathering the six preserved volumes with all the maps and engravings.

The first volume includes, on pages numbered in Roman numerals, a preface by the organiser Macvey Napier and a list of abbreviations. The last pages of each volume include a list of the articles and treatises contained in the volume and an index of engravings.

Dugald Stewart – Dissertation on the Progress of Metaphysical, Ethical and Political Philosophy (Parts I and II). Stewart traces a critical history of European philosophical thought from the Renaissance to the early 19th century, with particular emphasis on the Scottish, French and German traditions. The second, longer part includes reflections on Locke, Hume, Kant and others, and represents one of Stewart"s last philosophical works.

John Playfair – Dissertation on the Progress of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Parts I and II).
